What Im Learning

*as a budding Creative Director

When I first entered the world of creative direction, I knew I was signing up for more than just making things look good. I was stepping into a role that would require vision, leadership, intuition, patience, and a lot of learning as I go. While I’m still early in my journey, here are a few key lessons I’ve been learning (and re-learning) as I grow into this role.
Creativity Needs Structure
This one surprised me. I used to think creativity should be spontaneous and unconfined. However, the more I work on larger projects, the more I realize that structure is actually what frees creativity. Setting clear briefs, timelines, and boundaries helps ideas flow in the right direction. Creative chaos is fun, but creative clarity gets things done.
Leading Isn’t About Having All the Answers
Being a creative director doesn’t mean being the best designer, writer, or strategist in the room. It means being able to see the big picture—and trusting your team to help build it. I'm learning to ask better questions, give meaningful feedback, and empower others rather than micromanage.

Vision Is a Muscle
Clearly articulating a vision is an underrated skill. It's not just about “what” something should look like—it’s why it should exist and how it fits into the bigger narrative. The more I practice crafting and communicating vision, the stronger that muscle gets.
Process Is as Important as Product
It’s easy to obsess over the final result, but I’m learning that how we get there matters just as much. Building a healthy, collaborative, and inspiring process makes the end product better, and keeps teams excited to work together again.

Imposter Syndrome Is Part of the Job
Every step up feels like a stretch. That feeling of “Am I really cut out for this?” still shows up sometimes. But I’m learning not to push it away—just to acknowledge it and keep going. Growth doesn’t happen in the comfort zone.
The Best Ideas Don’t Care Where They Come From
The ego has no place in a creative room. Some of the best solutions come from unexpected voices. The role of a creative director is to spot great ideas, not to own all of them.
Reflection
This journey is cathartic, exciting, and deeply human. And honestly? That’s what I love most about it. I don’t have it all figured out, but I’m learning & listening to become a great leader and visionary. If you’re on a similar path, whatever your artistry may be, just know: you’re not alone.
Here’s to the constantly growing and trusting the process.
